From the greek name pharos, the most famous and probably the first lighthouse in history was on the island of Pharos, Alexandria, Egypt. Built in the third century B.C. between 285 and 247). Legend tells of the light from the Pharos being used to burn enemy ships before they could reach shore.
But even with the fresnel lens that was invented in 1827, it would have been possible.
